How to Improve the Efficiency of Your Air Conditioner

High summer and hot climates mean your air conditioner is working around the clock—a drain on both energy resources and your pocketbook. You can help your air conditioner run more efficiently—and save on your utility bills—with these tips.

    • Don’t fiddle with the thermostat. Set your air conditioner to a comfortable temperature, such as 78 degrees, and leave it there, when you are in the house. Some people do raise the temperature when no one is home, which is a good way to save money. But keep in mind, when you get home, it will take about 10 minutes to achieve maximum coolness. Your house won’t cool down any faster if you set the air conditioner to a lower temperature like 70. Be patient.
    • Use fans. Whenever possible, shut off your air conditioner and let ceiling or box fans keep you cool. They use less energy. Even if it’s not possible to go without the air conditioner altogether, set the air conditioner to auto and use your fans. They will circulate the unit’s cool air, lighten the load on your air conditioner, and maybe even allow you to set the thermostat a tad higher, saving you money.
    • Close the curtains. Closing the curtains and shades in rooms that receive direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day can lower the amount of work your air conditioner has to do to cool your home. When the sun goes down, open the window coverings to allow heat to escape into the night air.
    • Shut off the oven. Ditto for the washing machine, dishwasher and stove. They will only add more heat to your home. Try to do all housework and cooking in the evening houses when it’s cooler.
    • Replace your bulbs. Energy-efficient fluorescent lighting lasts longer and saves you money, and it also burns cooler than regular incandescent light bulb.
    • Give your A/C some shade. When the outside condenser is in full sun, the air conditioner will need to work harder. If possible, install your air conditioner on the north side of your house, which receives the least amount of sun. Another trick is to shade the unit by installing shade panels or planting shrubs. But be careful to leave enough room around the sides and top of the unit so vegetation doesn’t become lodged in the coils or obstruct the vents.

If your issue cannot be resolved with our easy tips, we strongly suggest that you call us for an appointment.
