Dryer Noises: What’s Normal and What’s Not?

Every dryer makes some noise—and it should not be cause for alarm. For instance, when you start your machine, there is often a squeaking noise that will disappear within the first few seconds of use. The drum will sound like a whir as it turns and tosses the clothes. If your clothes are very wet and heavy, you may hear a thumping sound in the beginning of the cycle. If you have a gas dryer, it’s common to hear clicking when the solenoid, the valve that controls the gas flow, opens. This sound is also audible when the gas is ignited, at the start of the heat cycle, and when the gas turns off.
Other noises, however, may indicate a problem with your appliance. To diagnose your dryer noise, read on.

Crashing—Dryers can shake and jump when they are not level on the ground of when the floor beneath the appliance isn’t secure. Also check that nothing is leaning against the dryer.

Squeaking—If the sound doesn’t go away in the first few seconds of the dryer cycle, check that all screws on the outside of the machine are tight.

Rattling or clanging—Check that foreign objects like barrettes or coins haven’t dropped below the lint filter. Remove the filter shine a flashlight into the cavity to see if anything is trapped. Be careful sticking your hands into the opening if you see something; the edges can be sharp. If the lint cavity is clear, check that there aren’t any loose coins, lipstick cases, buttons or zippers that could be causing the ruckus.

Scraping—Drum slides are made up of a plastic strip resting on a heavy felt strip. Mounted to the dryer’s frame, the drum slides support the front of the drum. If they become worn or loose, you could hear the sound of metal scraping when the drum rotates. Call a repairman and have it replaced.

Thumping—Like a flat tire, a frayed or damaged drum belt will cause a thumping sound. If the belt is fully broken, the drum won’t turn at all. You can check the condition of your drum belt by removing the dryer’s top cover. (It’s held in place by two screws at the top back of the machine.) The belt should be wrapped tautly around the back of the drum. If it looks slack or frayed, it will need to be replaced.
